Is GTA 6 OK for Kids? Rating, Content and Parental Controls

The short answer

Grand Theft Auto VI does not have a published age rating yet. As of September 6, 2026, the ESRB’s own database has no entry for it, and Sony’s PlayStation page for the game shows a Rating Pending badge and says the age ratings are unconfirmed.

That does not make it a maybe. Every mainline Grand Theft Auto game has been rated for adults, and Sony’s own page says the series regularly features profanity, violence, sexual themes and depictions of illegal acts and is generally not recommended for children. If you are deciding for a child, the honest answer today is no, and nothing about the final rating is likely to change that.

What the rating status actually is

You will see “rated M” attached to GTA 6 all over the internet. Here is what is true on the official record right now.

The ESRB, the ratings board for the United States and Canada, has not published a rating. Search its database for Grand Theft Auto VI and nothing comes back. Ignore the mobile apps with similar names; those are unrelated titles rated through an automated system.

Sony’s PlayStation store page carries the Rating Pending placeholder, the version that says a Mature 17+ rating is likely but not assigned. Sony’s own FAQ on that page says the age ratings for the game are unconfirmed at the time of writing, then points to GTA V’s ratings as the guide: M for Mature 17+ from the ESRB and PEGI 18 in Europe.

So the badge you have seen is a placeholder, not a decision. The board will publish when it publishes, and this page will be updated the day it does. Until then, plan around M 17+ and treat any site that tells you the rating is confirmed as ahead of the record.

What is in the game

No content descriptors have been published, because no rating has. What is available is Rockstar’s own footage. GTA 6: An Extended Look is a 26-minute feature captured entirely from in-game footage, released by Rockstar on its own channels. It is age-restricted on YouTube, which means you will need to be signed in to an adult account to watch it. That restriction is itself a useful signal. Sony’s page also lists what the store knows about the game today: single player, offline play enabled, and in-game purchases optional.

There is no online mode at launch

This matters more than the rating for many parents. Sony’s page states that Grand Theft Auto VI is a single-player experience. At launch there is no multiplayer mode, no voice chat with strangers, and no online lobby. The stranger-contact risk that comes with most big games does not exist here on day one.

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6. If one arrives later, it changes this picture, and this page will say so.

The subscription trap

Every digital pre-order of GTA 6 on PlayStation Store includes one month of GTA+, Rockstar’s paid subscription. Sony’s page is explicit that it auto-renews into a paid monthly subscription unless it is cancelled before the next payment date, and the claim process runs through the GTA+ product page separately from the game purchase.

If a teenager pre-ordered on a family card, check whether the GTA+ month was claimed. Cancelling is done in Subscriptions Management in the account settings. How to lock it on PS5

Sony’s own page points parents to the PlayStation Family App, which lets you age-restrict a child’s PlayStation account. Set that restriction on the child’s account and rely on it, not on the box or the store checkout.

When this page changes

Three things will move this page: the ESRB publishing its rating and content descriptors, Rockstar announcing an online mode, and the game launching on November 19, 2026, when the content can be described first-hand. Each will be checked against the official source before it is written here.
