The short answer

No. You do not need PlayStation Plus to play Grand Theft Auto VI, and you do not need Xbox Game Pass either.

Take-Two’s own pre-order announcement describes GTA 6 as a single-player experience. There is no online mode shipping on November 19, 2026. A subscription buys you online multiplayer, and there is no online multiplayer to buy access to.

Buy the game, install it, play it. That is the whole requirement.

Why the subscription is not needed

PlayStation Plus is required for online multiplayer in most PS5 games. Sony says so on its own support pages. Xbox has its own paid subscription covering the same thing, and Microsoft has renamed that tier more than once, so check the current name on Xbox’s own site rather than trusting an older guide.

Neither applies here, because GTA 6 at launch has no multiplayer of any kind. No co-op, no online free roam, no player lobbies. The launch product is the story of Jason and Lucia, played by one person.

What about GTA Online?

GTA Online is the multiplayer mode inside Grand Theft Auto V. It is a separate, older game and it is unaffected by the GTA 6 launch. If you play GTA Online today, nothing about it changes on November 19.

Rockstar has not announced an online mode for GTA 6. No name, no date, no pricing, no feature list. Anyone telling you otherwise is guessing.

Unconfirmed: if and when a GTA 6 online mode does arrive, a PS Plus or paid Xbox Game Pass subscription would very likely be required to play it, because that is how console online multiplayer works. Rockstar has announced nothing, so treat this as an expectation and not a fact.

GTA+ is not PlayStation Plus

This is the single most common mix-up, and the pre-order made it worse.

GTA+ is Rockstar’s own paid membership. PlayStation Plus is Sony’s. They are different products from different companies and one does not include the other.

Digital pre-orders of GTA 6 include a free month of GTA+. That free month is not PlayStation Plus, it does not grant online multiplayer access on your console, and it is not needed to play GTA 6. Our pre-order bonus guide covers how to claim it.

The one reason a story player might still want PS Plus

Cloud saves.

Sony includes cloud storage for saved data with PlayStation Plus, at every tier. Your GTA 6 progress lives on your console by default. If the console fails, is stolen, or is replaced, a local save goes with it.

For a game most people will put fifty or more hours into, that is worth thinking about. It is a reason to want PS Plus, not a reason to need it. The game runs perfectly well without it.

What you actually need on launch day

No subscription appears on that list.

Still unknown

Rockstar has published nothing on any of these. This page is updated when that changes.
